The artist, model, and mystic of Scarlet Monk
About Scarlet Monk
Scarlet Monk is a Chicago based vocalist, composer, dancer, choreographer, and actor. After graduating NEIU in Vocal Performance and Dance, Scarlet has been primarily working on experimental music, dance and theatre, as well as collaborating with beat makers, dancers and musicians from Chicago, the US and abroad. Scarlet has performed at numerous venues around the city which include Funky Buddha Lounge, Subterranean, Darkroom, Betty’s Blue Star Lounge and Heartland Cafe. Scarlet is also a member of the Laboratory Dancers “Modern” Dance Company which focuses on experimental dance through their sensory-based technique.
Scarlet’s current focus is inter-disciplinary; you can still expect the same hypnotic harmonies and subtle nuances found in her earlier recordings, but now more emphasis is placed on the live show and the complete theatrical experience. Scarlet’s main influences include Japanese Butoh, Gregorian Chant, Opera and choral music, Jazz (esp. Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Charles Mingus and Sidney Bechet), and many of Chicago’s current performing jazz and hip hop musicians.
